Many travelers come to Tajikistan to get to know the famous Pamir Highway. Some of the best guided tours in Tajikistan take adventurers on this famous highway, which passes through high passes and deep valleys of the Pamir Mountains. Due to the harsh climate in the Pamirs, there are relatively few inhabitants and therefore the landscapes are among the cleanest and most untouched in the world. Karakul, a lake formed in a meteor crater, is also a popular destination. Or visit Iskanderkul, a turquoise lake in western Tajikistan, surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges. If you’re an adrenalin lover who wants to raft or hike, or just looking for a place to hide from the onslaught of civilization, everyone in Tajikistan will find something for themselves.
Tajikistan is the only Persian-speaking country in Central Asia and feels different from its neighbors. In the lower, flatter country to the north are Khujand, Penjikent and Dushanbe, known as shopping centers on the Great Silk Road, with a long tradition of craftsmanship, literature and intellectualism. In the Pamir Mountains, where the villages are isolated by the rough terrain, the villages have their own dialects and traditions. In general, the people of Tajikistan are open, friendly and welcoming to foreigners. Be sure to try the traditional Tajik cuisine, which is especially tasty if prepared by locals at home.
